160,000 million years ago there was a flood just north of Hulett Wyoming. It washed a bunch of big ol dead and bloated dinos into an area where our favorite carnivores the Allosaurus had a snack!

In July, The Black Hills Institute of Paleontology welcomes volunteers every summer to dig dinos at the Waugh Quarry. Thanks to Pete Larson and his brilliant crew, we all had a terrific time and everyone found something worth talking about!

I just accepted a job as the sculptor in residence at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. I will be a seasonal federal government employee! I start May 13th. This is the job beyond my wildest dreams! Get paid to make my own sculpture, live in cheep housing and in a National Park! I will be working in an open air studio where tourist can freely visit, giving workshops in the studio and also out on the reservation and public schools, I can also give interpretive tours of the Monument! The black hills area is great fit for my interests in the Bad Lands, Wind Cave, Sturgis (cuz I'm a biker chic) the Black Hills Institute of Paleontology and a new adventure! I love buffalo steaks! God willing this can be a place where I can actually work and retire! Wow! Just do the deal and see what happens!

"Local Artsts Work is No Illusion."
SILVER CITY — The "Illusions of Integrity," an exhibit featuring sculptures and pinhole photography by artist Kim Henkel, is on display at the Western New Mexico University McCray Art Gallery through Sept. 29.
Henkel, a visiting professor at WNMU, has been working with sculptures since 1991 and pinhole photography since 1999.
"I really enjoy being in Silver City and am enjoying all the great feedback I am getting from the community about my exhibit," Henkel said.
Henkel exhibits her artwork actively in Arizona and New Mexico and has participated in more than 16 exhibitions since 2003, including at least five solo exhibitions. Henkel is also exhibiting installations of her work in galleries in Flagstaff, Albuquerque and Phoenix. She is preparing for another large solo exhibit at Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M., in October immediately after the WNMU exhibit. The exhibit features an installation using black lights and the back two galleries are filled with more than 100 pinhole photographs, some of which are printed using the Van Dyke process, and over 30 cast sculptures in iron, bronze and aluminum. "One of the most unique things about Illusions of Integrity' is the process the sculptures are made by: digging my hands in wet clay and then pouring the sculpture materials into the negative space," Henkel said. "The pinhole photographs are all images of the sculptures ambiguously blending into the landscape. The handmade pinhole camera obscura gives the images an historical and authentic feel."
All items on display in the gallery are for sale. Admission to the exhibit is free and everyone is encouraged to come see Henkel's art work.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 8-14-06 CONTACT: PUBLIC INFORMATIONSILVER CITY –A visiting professor from Northern Arizona University will teach Sculpture I and Advanced Sculpture art classes this academic year at Western New Mexico University as regular sculpture professor Michael Metcalf begins constructing the sculpture project commissioned for each side of Interstate-40 at Louisiana Avenue in Albuquerque. Kim Henkel has experience teaching foundry, fabrication, mold-making, carving, and site-specific sculpture. Additionally, Henkel has taught pinhole photography and no-silver processes as well as other workshops and classes.Henkel exhibits actively in Arizona and New Mexico and has participated in more than 16 exhibitions since 2003, including at least five solo exhibitions. She is regarded as a talented and successful ceramist as well as sculptor. She specializes in foundry work in metal fabrication. “My biggest obsession lately is with pinhole photography and non-silver printing processes such as cyanotypes and van dyke. I work in the environment by ambiguously placing my cast sculptures in the landscapes that look like expressive bones and then take pinhole photographs of them,” said Henkel. Henkel has studied in the field of paleontology and has worked as a model technician for the Mesa Museum of the Southwest. Along with the activities at the museum of installing exhibits such as “A T-Rex Named Sue” and “World Domination of Turtles,” she has been out in the field and worked in the prep labs. She is currently exhibiting installations of her work in two galleries in Flagstaff and is preparing for a large solo exhibit for next fall in Phoenix. Henkel earned a master of fine arts degree from Arizona State University, a bachelor of art degree in art education from the University of New Mexico, and a bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Henkel also studied abroad in London and Paris.She has taught for a number of higher education institutions including UNM, Coconino Community College and most recently at Northern Arizona University. Henkel has also taught at public schools in Tempe, Ariz., and in New Mexico at Questa and Magdalena.The Sculpture I class is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Advanced Sculpture classes are taught from 4 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.Henklel’s work featuring sculptures, photos and an installation will be on display in the “Illusions of Integrity” exhibit at the McCray Gallery during the month of September. I need a place to live in Silver City, New Mexico

Wow, I have been blown away by life. How quickly it can change if I open the door. And it has been windy. Hold on for your life. So I’ve been here in Silver City for 2 weeks now. My Sculpture classes are filled, I put up my solo exhibit in a 2000 square foot gallery, practically alone... Had some great help. They thought the show looked soooo good "one of the best they’ve ever seen" so they gave me the gallery job for about $6 an hour... the grad student running the gallery quit, she found a better job. I haven't found a place to live yet, been looking... asking everyone I meet if they know of a place. Only a few ads in the paper everyday. Around here it's word of mouth... I crashed on a professor’s spare room last two weeks, this week I’m at an adjuncts place... Been hitting meetings. Know one guy here from past involvement in the assemblies. He's my "Uncle Richard" an old vet, biker, Chicano dude that goes around and says "God Bless you." to everyone... He is a good friend!

My adventures at looking at housing... One place was a cool landlord taxidermist, also a skunk buster. Place smelled like skunk and the rooster kept me up all night. I would have rented it if I had 3 classes… It was in an old elementary school house! It was a big apartment, wood floors, and thick walls in Pinos Altos. One place was very small and very expensive-landlord was a herpetologist: studies snakes... so he had over 50 poisonous snakes in his garage... Rattle snakes from all over the world, pit vipers, cobras, Gila monsters… I’m just not OK with that! The other place is in town... one of the advanced sculpture students is a retired Cleveland police officer that bought the big old Elks Lodge in down town Silver... he's got the basement his sculpture studio, 2nd floor is going to be a restaurant/gallery, 3rd floor is a potential bed and breakfast cuz of the old lodge rooms. 3rd floor I can live... for free.... alone in a 30,000 square foot building. Creepy... I can clean up the rooms and remodel. He has to put in a functional toilet first. It's filthy. Oh, and HAUNTED....
So which would you pick?
1. Skunk house
2. Snake house
3. Haunted house

Please God, send me about 10 miles out of town up into the Gila Wilderness in a little house in the woods for under $300 a month.... Manifest Magdalena again… Amen

It has been very interesting.

Today, I’m feeling very exhausted. I moved a 14 foot U-Haul full of sculpture stuff down here from Flagstaff yesterday. I must have cried for over 6 hours. I loved Flag and didn't want to leave, but was finding no jobs. I put everything I own in a 10x20 storage unit. I thank God for Larry who helped me on the trip! I couldn’t have done it without him.

Sometimes I question my sanity. I am today.

My solo exhibit looks really awesome. I’m proud of myself! I will be documenting soon. I have over 100 pinhole photographs and 30 sculptures along with an installation using black light.

The people in this town are all very nice and very interesting! Most people are. I love to meet people and find out their stories. Everyone has one!

Great Sand Dunes National Park

I visited the dunes on Sunday July 16. Just north of the New Mexico border in Colorado is the Great Sand Dunes National Park. About 2 hours north of Taos. The dunes sit at the east basin of the Sangre De Cristo Mountians (Blood of Christ) The vast eco system here has formed more than 330 square miles of dunes up to 750feet high! I would suggest visiting in the spring or fall and hit the dunes at sunrise! In the spring Medano Creek runs from the winter moisture off the Mountians. Its meanders on the southern part of the dunes and weaves its way to the Rio Grande. The sand is washed off the mountians and is recycled back to the mountains with the winds.! Once again the park is full of depth and weight in it's human history as well as geological! Archeologist have found Clovis points and carved stone effigys from 11,000 years ago! Hoover signed it a Monument in 1932 then it became a Park in '76. In 2000 Congress authorized the expansion to the near by preserve. They got buffalo there!

I Need a Job

I need a job.
Yesterday I took the long and pleasant drive down to the old mining town of Superior, AZ. 3.5 hours later I interviewed at the mid/high school for an Art teacher position. During the interview the principal left to go to another meeting with his superintendant... So after they asked me 20 questions I had my 20 questions... Weird... No thankyou. Expecially after I saw the salary scale. 5 years experience + Masters = $32,000. HAHAHAHA. That's what I was making in 2002 at Magdalena School district in New Mexico be fore I went to grad school...
Today I interviewed at Gore. I wore my flip-flops to the interview. I forgot to change into my conformative girly heals. (I recall wearing my black cowboy boots with Lizzy's borrowed pantsuit to my interview in Boston.. Im not a shoe girl) I'm sure they didn't notice. I'm perfectly applicable for the job as a manufacturing operator. I would get to wear those nice full paper suits in the "clean room" assemblage of some sort of medical parts... 2nd shift, 10 hours 4 days a week. It was worth a try... I could use the bennies and the $$$. But 2nd shift starts at 2pm. My one and only class I'm teaching this fall is on Mondays and Wednesday from 2:30-5pm. It's more important to me that I keep my little drawing class at the community college rather than hore myself at Gore.

GOD, I NEED A JOB! To be continued...

Hovenweep National Monument

Over 800 years ago the Puebloan people lived in this small canyon in the 4 corners area. They constructed these standing towers constructed with great masonry skills. They occupied this beautiful Y shaped canyon for over 700 years. I visited this peaceful place on Monday July 31. I was the only one in the campground. My only company was a slick 3 foot long bullsnake. I knew from reading Ed Abbey that I wouldn't be bothered by small varments and rattle snakes. She was welcome as long and she didn't want to share my sleepin bag!

Fields of Hummingbirds

Last evening I borrowed the neighbors dog and went for a hike. Honey (the goofy love-adorable) and I walked up the forest road behind my house. The woods were drenched with the smell of wet pines and dirt. The air was cool and crisp over my skin. There were scattered thunderstorms slowly passing by as the light continued to change. The big mountain was covered with a UFO looking silent cloud. We walked up to the meadow that I haven't been too since they closed the national forest in beginning of summer. As we approached we saw a field of red. The field was covered with Indian paintbrush flowers because of all the wonderful rain. I stopped in awe then, I heard a buzzing sound. As I focused my eyes I was able to see the funny little birds having a blissful time. 100s of hummingbirds! We walked out into the middle of the field and I sat down with the old girl. When she finally quit panting I was able to hear the continuous hum and buzz surround me. I sat facing north to see the ponderosa pines at the edge of the meadow and beyond that was the Peaks with that glowing bright pink cloud hovering over the tree line. It made me laugh and cry. This was a phenomenon 100s of hummingbirds buzzing by me within inches. Honey suddenly jumped and tried to snap one out of the air like she does with flies. I think she was laughing too! As it got dark, I could hear the thunder off in the distance as it echoed through the valley and the flashes of lightning lit up the shape of the Peaks. The buzz suddenly stopped in the fiant darkness and I could hear the frogs... I followed Honey back home in the dark with my goofy headlamp and we ate icecream sandwiches...

Another pannel. I make these expressive pannels by pressing my hands in clay and then casting hydra-cal into the negative space. Hydra-cal is a statuary cement stronger than plaster. After the hydra-cal sets I can peal the clay off and get a positive.
